Rationale:

At St. Illtyd’s Primary School, we believe in fostering a love of learning that extends beyond the classroom. We recognise the importance of providing opportunities for pupils to consolidate their understanding, explore topics in greater depth, and develop independent study skills. However, we also understand the importance of a healthy work-life balance and the value of time spent outside of formal education. Therefore, we have adopted an optional homework approach, offered every half term, designed to be enriching and engaging, rather than a source of stress.

This policy is in line with the principles of the Curriculum for Wales, which emphasises learner well-being and the development of skills for lifelong learning. It also reflects our commitment to providing equitable access to learning opportunities for all pupils.

Aims:

  • To provide optional, enriching learning experiences that complement classroom learning.

  • To encourage pupils to explore their interests and develop independent study skills.

  • To promote a positive attitude towards learning.

  • To offer opportunities for pupils to consolidate and extend their knowledge.

  • To ensure that homework does not create undue stress or pressure on pupils or their families.

  • To provide clear and consistent guidelines for optional homework.

Implementation:

  1. Optional Homework Structure:
    • Optional homework will be set once per half term for each year group.

    • Homework tasks will be designed to be engaging, varied, and relevant to the curriculum.

    • Tasks will be differentiated to cater to the diverse needs and abilities of all pupils.

    • Homework will be presented in a clear and accessible format

    • Whenever possible, tasks will reflect Welsh culture and heritage.

    • Tasks will be designed to be completed independently or with minimal parental support.

  1. Types of Homework:
    • Examples of optional homework activities may include:

      • Research projects

      • Art and design projects

      • Practical investigations

      • Reading and comprehension activities

      • Online learning activities

      • Developing an area of personal interest.

  1. Feedback and Recognition:
    • Pupils who complete optional homework will be given opportunities to share their work with their teachers and peers.

    • Teachers will provide positive feedback and encouragement.

    • Recognition of effort and engagement will be prioritised over the quality of the finished product.

    • Where possible, within the curriculum, completed work will be used to enhance classroom learning.

  1. Parental Involvement:
    • Parents are encouraged to support their children in engaging with optional homework, but they should not feel obligated to provide extensive assistance.

    • Parents are encouraged to foster a positive attitude towards learning and to provide a supportive environment for their children.

    • Communication between home and school regarding homework will be encouraged.

  1. Monitoring and Review:
    • This policy will be reviewed regularly to ensure its effectiveness and relevance.

    • Feedback from pupils, parents, and teachers will be considered in the review process.

Responsibilities:

  • Teachers: To set engaging and relevant optional homework tasks, provide clear instructions, and offer positive feedback.

  • Pupils: To engage with optional homework tasks in a positive and responsible manner.

  • Parents: To support their children’s engagement with optional homework and to foster a positive attitude towards learning.
